Bandai Namco along with Three Rings Inc. have surprised anime fans with the announcement of Tokyo Ghoul: re [Call To Exist], the first video game based on Sui Ishida’s dark fantasy manga and anime. Bandai confirmed that the game will be available in PlayStation 4 and PC in North America and Europe before the year ends.

According to the official press release, Tokyo Ghoul: re Call to Exist is a survival action game that will be released on PlayStation 4 and gaming PCs via Steam. It will feature a fast-paced multiplayer online co-op game in which the goal of the player is to survive. Fans will partake in the war between Ghouls and Investigators, taking on the role of whomever they please.

The game is also said to unite characters from across the franchise, including those from Tokyo Ghoul, Tokyo Ghoul: re, and Tokyo Ghoul √A. Each of the characters will possess their own unique abilities and weapons to master; Kagune for the ghouls and Quinque for the investigators. Players must pick their side and challenge players online to see who will reign supreme in a battle to the death.

An initial trailer was released by Bandai to tease people about its gameplay:

For those who don’t know Tokyo Ghoul, it was first serialized in Shueisha’s seinen manga in September 2011. It was then adapted into a 12-episode anime television series by Pierrot Studio in 2014. The anime began airing in 2015 in America, gaining a following. A live-action film was then shown in theatres in July 2017.

The story follows a college student named Ken Kaneki, who was turned into a half-ghoul after an encounter with a deadly ghoul named Rize Kamishiro. He later found out that after his surgery that Rize’s organs were transferred into his body, and now like normal ghouls, he needs to consume humans to survive. Throughout the story, Kaneki continuously tore apart between his remaining humanity and his newfound bloodthirsty nature.

Tokyo Ghoul: re [Call To Exist] was first announced in June for a Japanese release on PlayStation 4. Good thing though that Namco decided to also release it on Steam for international fans. The game is said to be released on the third or fourth quarter of the year.
