What better time than Halloween to play through some truly terrifying games. Here is a list of 5 creepy games that we think are worth playing…if you dare!
- Dead Space
In Dead Space, you control an space engineer, Isaac Clarke, who is sent to investigate a rogue mining vessel. The ship has sent out a distress call for a repair and rescue operation. When you arrive for what should be a normal job, you find everything has gone to hell. The ship is overrun by a horrifying species known as Necromorphs. Despite releasing back in 2008, the game has aged really well. The lighting and sound design are delightfully creepy. The game still looks and sounds as scary as it was all those years ago.
- Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Unlike Dead Space, Amnesia: The Dark Descent makes the player vulnerable, giving you no means to fight back against the terrors that stalk you in the hauntingly empty Castle Brennenburg. What really makes this game stand out is its atmosphere. As you adventure through the castle solving puzzles and riddles, you slowly untangle a horrific mystery like some sort of playable H.P Lovecraft story. You’ll never be able to shake the feeling of something pursuing you through the castle, and the game represents the main character’s diminishing sanity with clever visual effects and a soundtrack full of sounds that imply more than what is chasing you lurks in the darkness. Turn off the lights, throw on a pair of headphones, and prepare to experience a disturbing tale.
- Alien Isolation
Much like Amnesia, Alien Isolation oozes atmosphere with its setting. You play as Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley (who you may remember from Ridley Scott’s original film). She arrives on the space station, Sevastapol, searching for a flight recorder from her mother’s lost ship. The Sevastapol is abandoned and it is clear that something is not right. You’ll spend your time in game wandering the claustrophobic halls of the derelict space station, all of which lovingly recreates the unique style utilized in Ridley Scotts films. This grounded approach to sci-fi creates an environment that tactile and believable. All of that is great, but the real star of the show is the titular Alien. The creature is every bit of intimidating as it was in the films. There is little you can do stop it, with flame throwers only scaring it away, and shooting it only making it more angry. Thus as you navigate the space station, being stalked by this overwhelming alien, you are tasked with outsmarting this supererior predator. You’ll hear it below you, crawling beneath the floor, sometimes it will be overhead, stalking you from the vents. You’ll never quite now where the beast will turn up next. When the Alien let’s itself be known, it’s unsettling hiss and thumping footsteps mean it’s time to run or hide. You’ll play as huge game of cat and mouse with the beast, who’s AI impressively adapts to the tactics you use to avoid it. Definitely a terrifying experience worth checking out.
- Resident Evil 2 Remake
Take control of rookie cop Leon Kennedy and college student Clair Redfield as you make your way into the zombie infested town of Raccoon City. The pair are separated by an accident at the beginning of the game, at which point you take control of one or the other for the remainder of the game (depending on which scenario you choose). Resident Evil 2 Remake is a wonderful reimagining of the classic game, with the game taking place in the beautifully realized Raccoon City PD Police Station. It’s up to you to survive an onslaught of walking dead, which requires close attention to your limited resources. As you wade through zombies and solve puzzles to progress further into unraveling the mystery of the situation, you will be pursued by the sinister Mister X. The invulnerable hulking figure tirelessly stalks you throughout the levels, so there is always a great amount of tension on the player. It’s not the scariest game on this list, but it does nail a tense atmosphere and is a game easily worth your time, particularly if you have memories of playing the original back in the day.
- The Evil Within 2
One of the more unique games on this list, The Evil Within 2 blends traditional survival with open world elements to great effect. The player character, ex-cop Sebastian Castellanos, is recruited against his will by the mysterious Mobius organization to enter “STEM”, a sort of matrix-like alternate reality powered by another’s mind. Something is wrong in this STEM world, as people have begun turning into monsters. From there you’ll explore an environment meant to look like an idyllic small town in America. You’ll be able to explore a small open world, finding supplies and fighting or avoiding the shambling monsters that litter the streets. The game delivers a constant feeling of tension as you explore its world. As you explore you’ll stumble upon more on rails horror experiences. For example, when exploring a certain home looking for supplies, your reality is suddenly twisted to a run down asylum where you are stalked by a creepy humming ghost. Moments like this blend into a main story that continually raises the stakes. The game is excellently paced with plenty of great boss fights, and the story is full of excitement, twists, and scares. Most of what is great here is best left vague and unspoiled. Do yourself a favor and experience this game. (prior knowledge of the first game not necessary!)
