Remnant: From the Ashes – Swamps of Corsus Review

Remnant: From the Ashes – Swamps of Corsus DLC
Gunfire Games / Perfect World Entertainment

Remnant: From the Ashes was one of those games that I just didn’t see coming. Yeah, I’d seen some trailers for it after it was initially announced—then I actually played it myself. It proved to be one of the best shooters that I’ve experienced in recent history.

For those who haven’t tried it out yet, Remnant: From the Ashes draws from the popular SoulsBorne franchise, that features lots of action, as well as some decent RPG goodness. Developer Gunfire Games enough new content into its game to make it unique.

Like a Souls title, it has some pretty difficult enemies and some very challenging sub-bosses and main bosses, but it has its own original lore, as well as some super-fun shooting mechanics to the equation.

Just when I thought the game couldn’t get any better, they recently released and new DLC called Remnant: From the Ashes – Swamps of Corsus, earning itself one of the longest titles in video game history. It features the same partially procedural maps, only more…swampy. It also adds a good amount of new content for the expansion’s $10 asking price.

Remnant: From the Ashes veterans will quickly notice that not only are their new enemies but lots of new loot as well. Whenever you manage to defeat one of the new bosses in the DLC, you’ll find that it drops a couple of craft-able items. The type of item will depend on exactly how you killed it and can consist of items that you can craft armor, weapons, and other types of equipment that can offer buffs to your character.

One of the most anticipated features that were anticipated by gamers was Swamps of Corsus’ new Survival Mode. First off, this new mode is completely separate from your standard Remnant: From the Ashes playthrough modes, so you don’t have to worry about overwriting your usual character.

What’s so exciting about Survival Mode is that (after generating a new character) you begin with hardly anything—no protective armor, just some money, and a measly pistol. After you purchase some low-grade gear, you start with the survival portion of the game.

As you progress through the various dungeons, you’ll either live to kill enough enemies to get your hands on some decent loot or perish trying. The new enemy types are more unusual than in the base game (then again, maybe I’ve just played the base game too much). They definitely scaled in difficulty and became more deadly as I moved through the various dungeons.

In the end, Remnant: From the Ashes – Swamps of Corsus is a really excellent DLC that adds a good amount of new content to what’s already a great game. It’s also generously priced and I’d play for the Survival Mode for the price point. If you already like the base game, this expansion is a no-brainer.

SCORE: 86%

The Remnant: From the Ashes – Swamps of Corsus DLC has some pretty good looking graphics that make its side-scrolling combat gameplay truly shine. However, you want to have a pretty beefy gaming PC or gaming laptop in order to play it at a decent framerate. So, you may just want to invest in a decent gaming rig:
