NVIDIA GeForce RTX: DLSS Explained

Today let’s take a look at NVIDIA’s latest technology, DLSS. DLSS is an acronym, which stands for deep learning super sampling. Whoa, sounds complicated, huh? Well it’s actually pretty straightforward to explain how this technology works to improve your gaming performance with NVIDA GeForce RTX powered CyberPowerPCs.

Deep learning is a fancy way of saying that your computer, or other computers, are studying your habits in order to improve your overall performance. In this instance, the AI Tensor cores that exist inside of your RTX graphics card are in charge of this. This is achieved by rendering less in real time, giving your GPU more headroom to maximize graphics settings and resolution.

NVIDIA’s DLSS supercomputer trains using non game specific content, creating a generalized network of data that can be used across a variety of games to enhance performance. This also means that more games can add support for the features of DLSS.

The second part to DLSS technology is Super Sampling. While super sampling has been around for a while, the AI tensor cores in RTX gpus take things to the next level. Super sampling is a process that scales the games image to a larger resolution than what your monitor supports. Through the combined effect of the two, AI deep learning and Super Sampling, you have DLSS. Think of it this way: the AI Tensor cores are able to tell your system when and where to apply super sampling. Then thanks to the data processed by NVIDIA’s super computer, these AI tensor cores can basically eliminate some strain on your GPU, allowing you to play at higher framerates and better resolutions than what that GPU would normally be able to handle. So, let’s imagine you have been playing your game at 1080p, but you own a 4k monitor. Thanks to DLSS you can now play that game at 4K, without a tremendous hit to performance that you would normally expect jumping up to such a high resolution. Games that support DLSS offer a few options to use. You can set the DLSS to favor Performance, Quality, or a balance between the two with the Balanced setting. Performance looks to use the AI tensor cores to maximize your frame rate, while Quality aims to maximize the visual fidelity of the game, and, as the name suggests, Balanced offers a middle-ground between the two.
