Alliance of the Sacred Suns
KatHawk Studios / Hooded Horse
While Stellaris has been my go-to science-fiction strategy fix for the past several years, I recently came across another game within the genre that looks extremely intriguing, called Alliance of the Sacred Suns. Just reading its Steam page would make any true sci-fi nerd want to play it:
“Alliance of the Sacred Suns joins 4X and grand strategy with RPG elements. Take the role of the newly crowned ruler of an interstellar empire on the brink of collapse. Unite the feuding noble houses, protect your people against invasion, and revive the glory of your fading empire.”
Luckily, a playable demo of Alliance of the Sacred Suns has just been released and after spending some time with it, that description is more than a little apt.
The backstory of Sacred Suns involves the Xyl, a race of aliens that fooled humanity into walking into its own demise. The Xyl provided some powerful tech to the human race, which allowed humans to build portals. However, the Xyl used portals to invade. After being forced into space, a war touched off and humanity barely managed to survive it. Now, a thousand years after the initial invasion, the society that the human race’s remnants created is about to fall, which is where you, the player comes in (this is a single-player experience).
I must say that Alliance of the Sacred Suns feels like Game of Thrones in space. Not only is there a ton of role-playing elements to enjoy, but it’s also a full-on 4x grand strategy game as well. This is a game where every conversation, every decision, every planetary visit can shape the future of your house, and the game gives you the freedom to do whatever you wish, limited by the number of actions you can take during each turn. As you assign projects to different locales in your empire and begin to expand, those choices will only multiply…for better or for worse.
The demo is being made available as part of participation in DreamHack Beyond. It will allow players to play through the tutorials and experience the beginning turns of the full game. Players will act through the role-playing lens of an actual emperor or empress–their time and activities will be limited, and the choice of which officials to entrust with tasks is of paramount importance.
The demo can be downloaded from the Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1113400/Alliance_of_the_Sacred_Suns/
