With the recent rise of esports, many famous personalities from the world of traditional sports such as Jeremy Lin, Shaquille O’Neal, Rick Fox, and more have begun to invest in the world of gaming. Most recently, it was Jeremy Lin who announced his love and interest in gaming by endorsing the Chinese organization VGJ, in his favorite game, DotA2. On Monday, 9/28/2016, it was announced that the Philadelphia 76ers would be squiring the esports organizations, Dignitas and Apex. Apex’s standing in the previous League of Legends Championship Series season guaranteed the organization a spot in the next season. The Apex team will continue participating in the LCS under the Dignitas name next split. Dignitas currently has a League of Legends, Overwatch, CS:GO, Heroes of the Storm, and Smite team. The organization also sponsors several streamers.

This hasn’t been the first time that a major sports entity has moved into esports. Last May, the German soccer club, FC Schalke 04, purchased a League of Legends spot in the European LCS. Other sports organizations have sponsored individual players too. The estimated purchase of Dignitas and Apex ranges somewhere from $3-$15 million, which is the industry standard of similar sized organizations. In addition to purchasing the team, the 76ers have hired an overseer, Greg Richardson, who has a background in consumer technology and video gaming.
