A Look at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

With the Nintendo Switch gaining traction, Nintendo’s fan favorite Super Smash Bros. Ultimate served as a star attraction during E3. The game provides some of the most complete, fulfilling content any Smash fan would ever want, with an inclusion of EVERY fighter ever introduced in the Super Smash franchise, as well as new fighters and stages.

Let’s dive straight into the jam-packed features this game offers. First, we have the character list. Listing all the characters would take far too long, but some of the main favorites are Mario, Samus, Kirby, Link, Fox, Ike, Zelda, Meta Knight, Mewtwo, Sonic, Peach, Ness, Ryu, Snake, Bayonetta, Pit, Pac-Man, and Mega Man (a long list of favorites, I know). Not only did Nintendo bring back all the reoccurring characters while retaining the beloved original ones, they also brought in two new characters: Ridley and Inkling Girl/Boy. Moreover, certain characters have multiple iconic outfits available to wear. For example, Mario can wear both his wedding and builder outfits.

Character mechanics and skills have been revamped: rapid attacks, ladder attacks, better mobility for air dodging, short hop attacks, A + B smash attacks, and perfect shield are all modified or new mechanics. In addition, new final smashes have been added for some players, and final smashes are now fast, allowing players to return to battle more quickly. All these changes will allow for a fresh yet familiar feel to the game, integrating aspects from all previous series titles.

Now onto the miscellaneous content. Echo fighters, spin offs of an original character, are also now part of the game. The following are echo fighters and their original character: Dark Pit and Pit, Lucina and Marth, and finally Peach and Daisy. Assist trophies have also been updated, with over 50 characters available. Some of the new assist trophies are Bomberman, Starfy, Midna, Sukapon, Bewear, Solgaleo, Healing Field, Black Hole, and Fake Smash Ball. Another piece of exciting news is that 8-player battles have returned!

Lastly, Stages. There’s an absolutely massive selection of stages. Some of them include Green Hill Zone, New Pork City, Wrecking Crew, Tortimer Island, and Moray Towers. Coolest of all, all stages come with standardized Battlefield and  Ω(Omega) forms, allowing players to enjoy their favorite backgrounds and music with the exact same stage format.
