Blizzard Announced Overwatch World Cup 2016

The world could always use more heroes, and soon these heroes will face each other at Blizzcon on August 20 to 21. Three months after Overwatch was released for Microsoft gaming PC, XBoxOne, and PS4, Blizzard has finally announced Overwatch first international competition. According to the official press release, “The Overwatch World Cup will be an international exhibition pitting teams from multiple nations and regions against one another in a battle for global glory.”

The event will take place at the largest hall in Gamescom, Europe’s largest trade fair for games and entertainment. The tournament will feature teams from different countries and region, with each of its members determine via a fan vote. After the voting concludes, each country’s players will be selected, and teams will be formed to represent their nation or region. The teams will take part in best-of-three, single-elimination online qualifiers which will start in September. From this cluster, 16 teams will be chosen to battle in round-robin group stages and single-elimination finals.

The 16 teams will include six from Europe, six from Asia Pacific, and four countries from America. Here’s the list of countries and regions that will take part in Overwatch first World Cup:

Blizzard has stated that the main goal of the competition is to include as many countries as possible. There’s no prize pool for this exhibition, however, the top 16 teams will receive an appearance bonus and a free trip to BlizzCon.
