Virtual reality is the future of gaming. That said, laptop manufacturers are taking the hint. They are starting to develop gaming laptops that can run virtual reality gears. Although VR gears like Rift and Vive are for PC, modern laptops can technically run these gears. But how?
As long as they have the specifications given by the VR manufacturers, it is possible. Oculus released the complete specifications on their official blog:
Oculus Rift Requirements:
- NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater
- Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
- 8GB+ RAM
- Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
- 2x USB 3.0 ports
- Windows 7 SP1 or newer
There are already gaming laptops in the market which can pass these specifications given by Oculus. For example, CyberPowerPC’s Fangbook 4 SX7-VR500 which is already VR-ready, has a NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 6GB PCIe video card and Intel® Core™ Processor i7-6700HQ with 2.6GHz Turbo 3.5GHz 6MB Cache Processor CPU. It has a Windows 10 Home (64-bit Edition) Operating System, Mobile Intel HM170 Mainboard, and 8GB (8GBx1) DDR4/2133MHz SODIMM Memory.
There is also the Vector-15 VR 600 Gaming Laptop which runs on Intel® Core™ Processor i7-6700HQ 2.6GHz with Turbo 3.5GHz 6MB Cache Processor. It has an Intel® HM170 Express Chipset Motherboard, an 8GB (8GBx1) DDR4/2133MHz SODIMM Memory RAM, and NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5, which makes it a VR-ready laptop to start with.
For those who are curious if they can upgrade their gaming laptop, there is also a NVIDIA GTX 970 has a mobile version in the market. Although this doesn’t necessarily mean that the VR game will run smoothly. So if you really want to play VR-games, then I suggest that you buy a new gaming laptop or a VR-ready gaming PC.
