CD Projekt Red Announces New Deal with The Witcher Author

CD Projekt Red has announced a new deal with The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski. The news came on December 20, after a yearlong dispute over the shared compensation for CD Projekt Red’s video game adaptation

According to the CD Projekt Red, they’ve come into an agreement that solidifies their relationship with Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of The Witcher Saga. However, the company didn’t disclose the specifics between the deal due to non-disclosure provisions. But CD Projekt Red reassured fans that the agreement fully satisfies the requirements and expectations of both parties in light of the previously concluded agreements. Furthermore, CD Projekt Red reaffirms its existing title to “The Witcher” as intellectual property in developing video games, graphic novels, as well as board games and merchandise.

CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński said in the announcement that they have always admired Mr. Andrzej Sapokowski’s word. And it has been a great inspiration for their team. And he believes that the new agreement marks a new stage in their continued relationship.

The disagreement between the two parties started when The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski demanded further compensation from CD Projekt Red in October 2018 for the company’s use of the Witcher license. The author wanted at least 6% of the profits made from The Witcher video games, but he stated that he is prepared to settle the matter amicably.

For those who don’t know, Sapkowski originally agreed to CD Projekt Red’s use of The Witcher license for a lump sum payment instead of a royalties system the company initially offered. Sapkowkski once said in the interview that he didn’t expect the success of the video.

Good thing that now, everything is settled and that CD Projekt Red will retain access to The Witcher license. The company is also working on a video game series called Cyberpunk 2077, which was based on the popular tabletop RPG. It is expected to be released for Microsoft Windows gaming PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 in 2020.
