Epic Games has announced that it has bought startup company Quixel to further improve and develop more realistic games.

For those who are not familiar, Epic Games is the creator of Unreal Engine, one of the most advanced video gaming engines there is. They have a massive library of high-quality 2D and 3D scans and a variety of tools. And their partnership with Quixel only means that their tools and library will further expand as new developers bring their own experience in creating photo-realistic content.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said that their partnership with Quixel will make Megascans free for all users in Unreal Engine. This will be available from triple-A studios to indies.

During the Games Developer Conference, which happened earlier this year, Epic Games and Quixel showed a video entitled Rebirth. It served as a preview of what the two can create together by using the Unreal game engine.

The video features photo-realistic environments which are placed in a futuristic setting, and are all made using scans that were taken from a month-long stint in Iceland.

Unreal Engine is a development tool that has been used by popular games, including few upcoming video games like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for gaming pc.

Quixel’s library of scans is now available to all developers who use Unreal Engine.
