Exorcise The Demons
Midnight Games EIRL
We’ve seen an unusual uptick in demonic-themed games as of late, which is a rather odd phenomenon. Games like the over-the-top Capcom product, Devil May Cry 5 is leading the pack; the abysmal (no pun intended) Darksiders 3; so-so Devil’s Hunt; and of course, the much anticipated Doom: Eternal is on the horizon.
Well, if this disturbingly burgeoning sub-genre isn’t becoming crowded enough, we have the recent debut of the most ultra-indie of demonic-themed games, Exorcise the Demons, by Midnight Games.
In Exorcise the Demons, the main player is trapped within a demon-infested abyssal environment and must perform exorcism rituals (surprise!) in order to defeat demonic entities that threaten him. The secondary player is tasked with browsing through a so-called “Book of Rituals” in order to discover how to go about manifesting these sacred rites.
But there’s a big twist: Gameplay-wise, only the main player who is stuck within the abyss can actually see what’s happening on-screen, their partner (the secondary player) can only assist them by reading the sacred tome and relating with demon-banishing recipes to the primary player. In other words, communication and teamwork are key factors in achieving success.
The game’s developers emphasize that Exorcise The Demons is a highly cooperative and immersive experience, but also warn that it may test the friendships between the people who play it. Here are some of the game’s key features of Exorcise The Demons:
An original cooperative gameplay: one game, two different experiences.
To play with your friends, all you need is a copy of the game. You can easily use your favorite voice chat to play!
A fascinating story mode, divided into 25 missions.
Dubbed by Brigitte Lecordier (Witcher, Skyrim …) and Pierre-Alain De Garrigues (Diablo, Warcraft, Hearstone …).
7 different rituals generated randomly!
Win artifacts to access the secrets of the game.
Free DLC
A rich universe in HD graphics
The Premium Book of Rituals and everything you need are included in the game in your language.
You can also paste it via the game, on your desktop to print it!
The slightest mistake will test your friendship!
There are three ways in which Exorcise The Demons can be played. The first way is the game’s story mode, which lets players explore its narrative through twenty-five completely narrated quests.
Then there’s the game’s free mode, which lets players create and customize each game themselves, or let the game do everything for them. Either way will let players confront and tackle constantly increasing challenges.
And last, but not least is the game’s solo mode, which lets lone wolf-types have access to the in-game ritual book and can ward off demons all by themselves.
Personally, I’m not into demonic-themed games, but people who don’t mind them may appreciate this game’s asymmetry and co-op-based gameplay loop, that will surely test their communication skills.
SCORE: 72%
Exorcise The Demons has some pretty nice looking graphics that make its exorcism-based gameplay truly shine. However, you want to have a pretty beefy gaming PC or gaming laptop in order to play it at a decent framerate. So, you may just want to invest in a decent gaming rig:
