How to Buy and Build a Gaming PC for Fortnite Battle Royale

Build a Gaming PC for Fortnite

Fortnite is currently one of the most popular online games. One of the reasons it is popular with gamers is that it doesn’t require a beefy rig to play the game. Its developers, Epic Games, made sure that its minimum and recommended requirements were designed so that a significant number of players could enjoy the game. Below a guide to help you buy and build a gaming PC to fully enjoy playing Fortnite.

What is Fortnite Battle Royale?

Fortnite Battle-Royale is a free-to-play mode where it puts 100 players on a map where they need to fight off each other until the last man is standing. You can choose to play the battle-royale mode solo or in a group of up to 4 players.

The game starts when the players are dropped off on a massive island on a parachute. You must collect weapons, armor, and resources to build fortifications and kill other players to survive the game.

And aside from other players, you must also be aware of the Eye of the Storm, which starts to shrink as the game progresses. The Eye of the STorm is a large circle that gets smaller. Players left outside of its circle can take damage and ultimately die. The Eye of the Storm exists in the game to force players to encounter each other as the circle gets smaller.

How to Buy and Build a Gaming PC for Fortnite Battle Royale

  1. Check Fortnite’s PC requirements.
  2. Choose the right CPU for the game.
  3. Select a graphics card.
  4. Know the RAM requirements.
  5. Make sure to check the hard drive.
  6. Choose a motherboard.

1 – Check Fortnite’s PC requirements.

Before you start buying any PC parts and components, you need to know first the PC requirements for Fortnite Battle Royale. Again, Fortnite is a light game, and you don’t need any high-end PC hardware to play the game. Thus, building a gaming PC for Fortnite doesn’t have to be expensive. Its developer, Epic Games, has minimum and recommended requirements for the game.

You can choose to build a gaming PC with the minimum PC requirements if you want to save money, but if you have high-end settings refer to the recommended requirements.

Here are the official system requirements for Fortnite Battle-Royale below:

Minimum System Requirements for Fortnite

  • Processor: Core i3-3225 3.3 GHz
  • Video Card: Intel HD 4000 on PC; Intel Iris Pro 5200
  • Memory: 4GB RAM
  • OS: 64-bit of Windows 7/8/10 or Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6
  • Processor: Core i5-7300U 3.5 GHz, AMD Ryzen 3 3300U, or equivalent
  • Video Card: Nvidia GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DX11 GPU
  • Video Memory: 2 GB VRAM
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM or higher
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit

Aside from the minimum and recommended system requirements, Epic Games also has Epic Quality PC requirements for Fortnite Battle-Royale. Check the requirements below:

Epic Quality System Requirements for Fortnite

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-8700, AMD Ryzen 7 3700x or equivalent
  • Video Card: Nvidia GTX 1080, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, or equivalent GPU
  • Video Memory: 4 GB VRAM or higher
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM or higher
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • Hard Drive: NVMe Solid State Drive

2 – Choose the right CPU for the game.

If you have a low budget, you can stick with the low-end requirement for the PC, which is Intel Core i3-3225. But if you can spare more bucks, we definitely recommend that you get an Intel Core i5-7300U processor. It is a dual-core CPU released back in 2017, so it won’t cost you a lot anymore.

However, if you want a beefier setup, you can pick an Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X processor. This is the best processor choice for Fortnite and is intended for pro-players or streamers.

If you’re building a non-streaming build PC, you can choose a CPU with 4 cores or less. However, suppose you’re building a PC for streaming. In that case, we definitely recommend that you get a processor with more than 4 cores.

3 – Select a graphics card.

When it comes to the graphics card, you need to note that it should be compatible with your motherboard. To run Fortnite Battle-Royale in its bare minimum graphic setting, you can buy an Intel HD 4000 or the Intel Iris Pro 5200. Then for a high preset graphic setting, it’s best to choose an Nvidia GTX 960 or an AMD Radeon R9 280 graphics card.

Then to apply an Epic Preset for your build, you need to choose an Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card. A mid-range choice will be the NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti which is suitable for a medium to medium-high graphics setting.

4 – Know the RAM requirements.

As Epic Games stated in Fortnite’s official requirements, the Fortnite Battle Royale can run on 4GB DDR4 RAM. But that’s a bit too low, and you might instead want to go for an 8GB to 16 GB DDR4 RAM. Even an 8GB of RAM can be used up by your PC quickly. 16GB RAM will be the best choice, but if you can afford 24GB RAM, then go for it.

5 – Make sure to check the hard drive.

With the latest updates of Fortnite, the game can occupy up to 30GB of your hard disk space. But remember that Epic Games will still add more updates, features, and content to this game, so this number will still grow in the future.

There are three types of hard disk drives for your gaming PC build. These are the (1) hard disk drive, (2) SATA SSD, and (3) an NVMe SSD. Most gamers will like to build a pc with the combination of a hard disk drive and an NVMe SSD. You can use the primary drive for your operating system and install your games, while you can save any media and large files on your hard disk drives.

6 – Choose a motherboard.

Last but not least, you need to pick a motherboard for your PC build. Again, the processor should be compatible with the motherboard of your choice. Any disparity between the two parts can cause problems to your PC build.

For a quick tip, here are things you need to consider when buying a motherboard:

  • socket for the processor
  • the number of PCle lanes
  • the PCle version
  • VRM size
  • phase power design
  • SLI/Crossfire support
  • the number of ports and lots
  • the version of ports and lots
  • whether the motherboard is overclockable or not
