How to Quickly Speed Up Your Gaming PC

How to Quickly Speed Up Your Gaming PC

The most frustrating thing one can encounter with their gaming pc is when it starts to slow down. It’s a normal thing to happen with computers as they age. But there are other different reasons as to why your gaming PC is beginning to slow down. Perhaps your PC is running low on memory or disk space or that your software is too old. But before you try to consider buying a new unit, you might want to know that there are different ways to improve your PC’s speed. Below are ways on how you can quickly speed up and improve your gaming PC’s performance:

How to Speed Up Your Gaming PC

1 – Upgrade your RAM.

Your PC’s RAM sets a limitation to its physical memory capacity where your computer stores that program you are currently using. Most gaming PCs, even the low-priced ones, come with a minimum of 8GB RAM. However, you can upgrade and add more RAM to your motherboard’s memory slots. A 16GB RAM can suffice, but we definitely recommend upgrading it up to 24GB if you don’t want to experience any interruption in your game’s performance.

Upgrading your RAM also makes your games load faster, so it’s definitely worth it to spend some cash and add RAM to your memory slots.

2 – Install a faster SSD.

Another limiting factor that can cause your gaming PC to slow down is if your hard disk storage is almost full. The hard disk is where all of your programs, video games, and personal files are stored. Whenever you load or open one of these programs, it transfers that data from your hard drive to your RAM. Most PCs have a mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) for storage. But suppose you want to install many video games on your gaming PC. In that case, we definitely suggest you invest in an SSD (solid-state drive).

The SSD can increase the read-and-write speed of your PC’s data processing by at least 10. This means that Windows will load faster, files will open right away, and your video games will run smoother.

3 – Change your GPU.

Suppose new video games such as CyberPunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, or Final Fantasy VII Remake, are not running smoothly or looking graphically pleasing. In that case, it’s time to upgrade your GPU or graphics card. If you want to upgrade your GPU, we recommend looking at brands such as AMD and NVIDIA.

For starters, look into NVIDIA GeForce 1050/1060 series or on AMD Radeon 460/470, which is excellent for playing games at full HD resolutions set on 1920 x 1080 pixels. However, if you want to play at full HD on a screen with WQHD resolutions at 2560 x 1440 pixels, check AMD Radeon 480 or NVIDIA GeForce 1070/1080. While, for 4K-resolution high-end gaming, NVIDIA has the Ti or Titan X (p), which can run games at 4096 x 2160 resolution.

4 – Defrag your disk.

Mechanical disks tend to experience fragmentation with time. Your disks will become more cluttered as you open more programs, move files, and copy data. This will make it harder for your processor to read and write your programs and files. To fix this problem, you can choose to defrag your disk.

Here are the steps to defrag your PC’s disk:

  • Step 1 – Go to Start Menu.
  • Step 2 – Type in the word “Defrag” and hit Enter.
  • Step 3 – Click Optimize, and wait until the process is complete.

5 – Disable startup items.

If your gaming PC is taking time to load and boot up, the main reason might be because your PC is loading too many startup programs. Open your Windows Task Manager, and check all the list of programs that run automatically at your PC startup. Disable all the startup programs you do  not need. For example, Epic Games, Steam, or Discord are usually listed on your Startup programs.

Here are the steps you can follow to disable any startup programs:

  • Step 1 – Open your Windows Taskbar and select Task Manager.
  • Step 2 – Go to Startup, and check all the items listed.
  • Step 3 – Right-click on the program you don’t want to run at StartUp.
  • Step 4 – Choose Disable.

6 – Update your drivers.

Your gaming PC has more than 100 built-in components. And each of these components works simultaneously through their device drivers. These drivers are software that can control the way each one works. Early versions of drivers can be faulty, so you must update your drivers to ensure that your gaming PC can perform at its top speed.

Another option to make sure that your drivers are working properly is to use a dedicated driver updater software. This software will automatically scan and update your drivers.

7 – Update your OS.

Microsoft constantly releases updates of its OS. Many of these updates fix security holes. Other updates improve the performance of your gaming PC. If you are running Windows 10, make sure that you are using the most current OS version.

To check the version of your Windows, follow these steps:

  • Step 1 – Go to Settings.
  • Step 2 – Choose System.
  • Step 3 – Select About.

After checking your OS, the next thing you need to do is to make sure to keep them updated. You can choose to enable Windows Auto-Update or choose which updates you want to install on your computer.
