According to Google, League of Legends is currently the most popular online game in 21 states. It was released on 2009 and developed by Riot Games for Microsoft Windows gaming PCs and Mac OS computers. Inspired by the Frozen Throne mod, Defense of the Ancients, League of Legends (LoL) immediately rose to fame, and now competes with Dota’s successor, Valve’s Dota 2.

If you are currently new to the game, then you might want to learn about the ten starting champions. These are the only available champions the starting users can play from Level 1 to Level 5. Once they reached Level 6, they will be able to unlock other champions that they can use.

League of Legends starting champions are selected by the developers each year to help beginners adapt to the gameplay. That’s why for today, we’re going to learn more about them and their skills.

Let’s get to know the first five of the ten starting champions:

Ashe

Role: Marksman

For years, Ashe, The Frost Archer, has always been on the roster of starter champions. She is a utility Marksman, best used in the bot lane along with a durable support champion. Her gameplay is quite easy to memorize, and she can be a destructive force of nature when mastered by a player.

Her attacks can slow targets, allowing her to move between attacks to keep the target at a range — a tactic known as kiting.

Garen

Role: Fighter

Garen, the Might of Demacia, also happens to be a favorite choice of starting players. He is often described as a juggernaut, a hybrid champion that takes the role of both tank and fighter. Garen is able to do this thanks to his Passive skill that heals him if he hasn’t taken any damage for seconds and his powerful short range abilities.

His last ability, Demacian Justice, also deals more damage when the target enemy is low on health. Garen often plays as the top solo champion.

Jinx

Role: Marksman

Jinx, the Loose Cannon, is a marksman capable of dealing high damage. She can switch between two different attacks through her first skill, Switcheroo!, allowing her to use either a minigun or grenade launcher at a time.

Her mini-gun which she calls Pow-Pow gives her short-ranged but fast attacks, while her grenade launcher Fishbones delivers a longer range and can deal an area-of-effect damage. Similar to Ashe, she is often found in the bot lane along with a support champion.

Kha’Zix

Role: Assasin

Kha’Zix, the Void Reaper, is one of the first jungle champions you’ll be able to play in League. He is a deadly assassin that greatly excels in winning one-on-one battles, making him great at hunting squishy opponents.

His passive skill, Unseen Threat, makes him invisible to the enemy team and gives him a bonus attack when targeting an opponent. His ultimate, Void Assault, makes his skills more powerful and can improve his ability damage.

Lissandra

Role: Mage

Lissandra, the Ice Witch, is an impressive Mage champion that can take the top and mid lane. Although she is a close range champion, she can slow, root, and stun her enemies with ice. Her first skill, Ice Shard increases range when it hits any enemy, making it an effective skill to use when harassing champions that hide behind minions.

Lastly, her ultimate skill, Frozen Throne, is an ability that can be cast on the enemy and herself. If she targets an opponent, the target is frozen solid and stuns it. The dark ice that will emanate from Frozen Throne will also slow enemies’ movement speed and deal magic damage to enemies. However, if she cast it on herself, she will become untargetable and invulnerable.
