For me, 2014 was a year of change.
The update to Ultra was obviously one of them, but after 10 years of living in Nagoya, I decided to move to Tokyo.
There were many things I gained after moving to Tokyo, such as the opportunity to do game-related work, and – as followers of fighting games know – access to high quality practice. It was a good memory, and as soon as we moved to Tokyo, I was very busy as I had to go to tournaments in Singapore and America for CEO and EVO. It feels like ages ago, but it was only half a year ago.
My goal this year was to win a major tournament title. EVO was a very great experience for me, as I was able to qualify for the final day for the first time and placed in the top 8. As big of an accomplishment as that was, I wasn’t yet satisfied because I still couldn’t achieve my ultimate goal, which was to win the whole thing. In smaller tournaments, despite finishing strongly – in some cases, winning the whole thing – there were many cases where I still wasn’t satisfied and felt down.
In the fourth Topanga League, I was the runner up. I was one step away from a victory and while it was disappointing to not win, in the latter half of the league play I was very satisfied with my matches. That made me very happy and it helped in building a lot of momentum for me coming into the Capcom Cup Finals.
As close as I got over the year, in the last tournament of the year, Capcom Cup, I finally won. I achieved my goal! I was able to do what I’ve done and practiced this year. I didn’t feel much the moment I won, or when I came back to the hotel. However, when I returned home and Choco and Gonsuke (our dog) welcomed me, I really felt that I did it. Gosuke was just licking the floor, though.
2014 is over, and I am very happy to have ended it the way that I did. In the end, it certainly was a year of change. I will work hard to make 2015 a better year than this year. I want to thank the people who have been cheering for me this year. Please support me in 2015!
