Perhaps the most important role a man must take on is to be a good father to his children. Father’s Day is nearing, and as a way to honor our awesome fathers, we decided to make a list of the best father figures in the world of video games. These men have earned a spot in our hearts by showing us what it means to be a good father.
Here they are:
Joel from The Last of Us
Joel’s backstory from The Last of Us all caught our hearts. He lost his daughter on the night of the Cordyceps outbreak while attempting to make it to a military outpost for protection. The event left him bitter until Ellie came to her life, a young girl who has a natural immunity to the Cordyceps fungus. He became in charge of taking Ellie to a research facility in Salt Lake City, in the hope that scientists will learn more about Ellie’s natural immunity and develop a cure for the human race.
Through their journey, Joel and Ellie formed a father/daughter bond that will eventually lead him to make a decision whether to sacrifice Ellie’s life for the good of humanity or save her from death and deny the world of the cure.
Lee Everette from The Walking Dead: A Telltale Series
Lee Everette is another good example that you don’t have to be related by blood to be a family. Yes, he is a criminal, but we witnessed his character development as the game progresses. After finding a young girl named Clementine, all alone in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, Lee takes it upon himself to become a surrogate father to her.
What unfolds next is the story of a man who finds another shot at life by protecting a girl, who’ll give his life a new meaning. The Walking Dead is one of Telltale Series best games, which based on Robert Kirkman’s award-winning comic book series. It is still available on Steam for Microsoft Windows gaming PCs and laptops.
Harry Mason from The Silent Hill Series
There couldn’t be a better father to use an example other than Silent Hill’s Harry Mason. After losing her daughter Cheryl on vacation in Silent Hill, he eventually found her reborn as the incarnation of Alessa, the supernatural force that cursed the place. Although scared and helpless, Harry decided to keep the baby as his own, thinking that his daughter still lives within this being.
After two more games in the series, we learned that Harry Mason raised the child as his daughter and named her Heather, moving away from Silent Hill and all its mystery. Unfortunately, he dies, trying to protect Heather from it. But in the end, we witnessed how his unwavering love for his daughter eventually help in destroying the evil force that resides in Silent Hill.
Nier from NieR: Gestalt
Nier is the protagonist of Drakengard’s spin-off game, NieR: Gestalt. He is the father of Yonah, who is infected with the Black Scrawl, an ailment that causes strange dark runes to appear on the skin. Nier was described as an “unyielding protagonist” who is trying to find a cure for Yonah’s disease.
Nier loves his daughter deeply and strives each day to provide everything that Yonah needs. Although he has an intimidating appearance and a skilled fighter, he is a kind-hearted man with an incredible work ethic and a strong sense of honor.
Big Daddy from Bioshock
Big Daddies are genetically enhanced human beings that were created to protect Bioshock’s Little Sisters, genetically-altered little girls who were mentally conditioned to reclaim the ADAM from the corpses around the Rapture. The two have an undeniable bond as seen in the game.
Although not related by blood, a Big Daddy will do anything to protect his Little Sister. If you hurt a Little Sister, be ready to face their wrath.
